What are Rod-End Bearings?
Rod-End Bearings are mechanical articulating joints that have a spherical shaped ball that rotates within a race to accommodate a wide range of angular misalignment.
These joints, also known as heim joints or rose joints, can be used in any application that an articulating joint is required for a misaligned attachment, including tie rods, control rods, and steering links.
They are typically used in linkages and low-speed applications, and can be found in vehicles, boats, aircraft, industrial machinery, and much more.
Rod end bearings are a common substitute for clevis ends that attach a second component at a perfect 90-degree angle to the shaft. The ball swivel on a rod end bearing allows for the attachment of a second component that is misaligned to a limited degree.
The second component is attached directly to the ball swivel which is moved to achieve the proper angle. The ball swivel is at the end of a threaded shaft used to connect the bearing. If the shank of the rod-end is threaded it is commonly referred to as “male”. Inversely, if the shank is threaded on the inside it is referred to as “female”.
